Which free classic books come with BeyondRead?

About 20,000 public-domain books in 42 languages come built in, free to browse, search and download with no account: novels, poetry, philosophy, history and more. They are free because their copyright has expired; each book’s page in the app says why it is free and where the text comes from. The selection varies by App Store country.

What "public domain" means here

A book is public domain when its copyright has expired or never applied, so anyone may read, copy and share it. That covers most literature written before the early twentieth century: Austen, Dickens, the Brontës, Le Fanu, Stevenson, Tolstoy in translation, and thousands of less famous titles.

BeyondRead does not sell books and does not remove DRM. The free library sits on the same shelf as the EPUB and PDF files you bring yourself.

Examples you can open today

  • Pride and Prejudice and Meditations come pre-installed, so the app has something to read before you sign in to anything.
  • Uncle Silas, Carmilla and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the group reads of Victober 2026, are in the library.
  • Shakespeare, Austen, Dickens and the other Victorian novelists are the kind of author the library is built around; use the search box in the app to check a specific title.

Availability of an individual title can differ by country, because public-domain rules differ by country.

42 languages

The library is mostly English, but it also carries books in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and more. Because the AI translates a selected passage in context, a reader can open a classic in its original language and still follow it.

Why a library plus AI, rather than a library alone

Free classics are easy to find; finishing them is the hard part. Readers rarely abandon a classic because of the plot. They abandon it at one sentence: an archaic word, a dialect spelling, a reference nobody explains. BeyondRead keeps the library and the help in the same place: select the sentence, ask, keep going.
